Five digital media tips for print designers

Since I started working freelance I've been doing more work as a Flash Developer and less work on the design side. While I really don't mind, since I enjoy development, it's becoming increasingly painful dealing with 'traditional media' designers and art directors that create artwork that simply doesn't translate well into the digital platform.

I believe that in order to design for the digital platform, one first needs to understand it. For me it boils down to one element: The pixel. The pixel, or at least the grid of pixels known as a screen or monitor, is the link between the user and the media.

A pixel is a tiny dot, consisting of 3 colours: Red, Green and Blue (RGB). Each pixel can display a different amount of each colour, which gives us the ability to see full-colour graphics on our screens, which brings me to:

Is JS the future of RIA?

Rich Internet Applications (RIA's) have always been a 'Flash thing'. One of he reasons I adopted Flash as my main platform was that it enabled me to create user experiences with movement, interactivity, sound and pretty much anything I could think of with minimal effort.

Imagine how I felt what I found this site: http://www.chromeexperiments.com/

Install Chrome if you haven't already, then experience JS/HTML in a way that's always been reserved for Flash. I mean really, Google with a gravity engine? How cool is that?!

Hello world

Hello world, I'm Holger.

I develop. I design. I animate.

I am, primarily, a Flash Monkey. I like to use 'monkey' because 'guru', 'expert' and 'specialist' sound too serious and I enjoy what I do. What I do differs from day to day. In the last week I've been building a slick HTML/CSS site, some web banners, and a 2D animation. In the next few weeks I should be working on a Flash game and an intranet site.

I'm a Google fanboy, I use a lot of their stuff: Android, Google Calendar, Tasks, Documents, Reader and of course Gmail. I can't wait for Wave to be released. I love all things web, and I'm a proud internet addict. I love gadgets, especially my Android phone and my laptop. I love the pixel - the little electric dot that has inspired me, and kept me entertained for what seems like forever.
